Some Lesser Known Facts About Jamshed Irani

  • Jamshed Irani was an Indian industrialist who was the managing director of Tata Steel Limited. He died on 31 October 2022 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India due to natural causes.
  • After completing his formal education in 1963 in the United Kingdom, Jamshed Irani joined the British Iron and Steel Research Association (BISRA), where he worked as a senior scientific officer till 1968. While working at BISRA, Jamshed was given a promotion and made the head of the Physical Metallurgy Division (PMD).
  • In 1968, he left BISRA and moved to India from the UK and joined the Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO); the company was renamed in 2005 as Tata Steel Limited. He initially worked there as an assistant to the Director-in-Charge of Research and Development.
  • In 1978, Jamshed Irani was promoted and made the General Superintendent (GS) of TISCO and a year later, he became the General Manager (GM) of the company.
  • In 1981, Jamshed Irani became a member of the board of Tata Iron and Steel Company.
  • In 1985, Jamshed Irani was appointed as the president of Tata Iron and Steel Company.
  • Every year since 1987, Jamshed Irani along with his sister Diana Hormusjee organised the Jiji Irani Challenge Cup Cricket Tournament, a cricket tournament, which is hosted every year by the Zoroastrian Club of Secunderabad in memory of their father.
  • From 1988 to 1992, Jamshed Irani worked at Tata Iron and Steel Company as a Joint Managing Director (JMD).

    Jamshed collects a lot of things on our vacations together. He has got at least 300 key chains, each a souvenir of a place we have vacationed at! Apparently key chains are not all he collects but also stamps, an enviable readers’ digest collection, photographs of family trips..!”
