Nicky was born to Earl and Rose Hayden, who were dirt track riders.
He was on a bike at the age of 3 and at the age of 5, he started racing against elder brothers Tommy and Roger on a homemade track.
He made his MotoGP debut in 2003 and finished 3rd in the standings two years later.
In 2006, he won his only MotoGP championship.
He had his last race for Red Bull Honda in the Superbike World Championship races at Imola on 14 May 2017.
On 17 May 2017, he was cycling along the Rimini coastline in Cesena, Italy when he met with an accident with a car. Nicky suffered head and chest injuries in the accident and was rushed to the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, where he was treated in the intensive care unit.
After almost a week long battle, he died on 22 May 2017, due to ‘serious polytrauma’ with subsequent ‘serious cerebral damage’ following the accident.
